Impact of Practical Demonstration Activities on Skill Transfer among Adult Learners
Abstract
Skill transfer is an important outcome of adult learning because it reflects the ability of learners to apply acquired knowledge and skills in practical situations beyond the immediate learning environment. Practical demonstration activities involve showing learners how tasks, procedures, or techniques are performed while providing opportunities for observation and subsequent practice. However, some adult learners may experience difficulties transferring skills learned during instructional activities to real-life situations. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of practical demonstration activities on skill transfer among adult learners. Practical demonstration activities provide learners with opportunities to observe the correct performance of tasks and understand the sequence involved in completing them. During demonstrations, instructors can explain procedures, display relevant techniques, identify important steps, and provide learners with opportunities to practise what they have observed. Repeated demonstrations and guided practice can help learners develop a clearer understanding of how knowledge and skills are applied to practical tasks. This approach can make learning more concrete and relevant to adult learners. Skill transfer refers to the ability to apply knowledge, skills, techniques, or procedures acquired in one learning situation to a different but related practical situation. Effective skill transfer requires learners to recognize where and how previously acquired skills can be applied. Practical demonstration activities are expected to influence skill transfer by connecting explanations with visible performance and opportunities for practice. Through observation and application, adult learners may become better prepared to reproduce learned procedures when faced with similar practical tasks. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a practical skill-transfer assessment administered before and after exposure to practical demonstration activities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of practical demonstration activities on skill transfer among adult learners. The study is expected to establish that adult learners exposed to practical demonstration activities demonstrate improved skill-transfer abilities compared with their performance before the intervention. The findings are expected to show improvements in learners’ ability to apply demonstrated procedures, reproduce learned techniques, and adapt acquired skills to related practical tasks. This would suggest that practical demonstration activities can contribute positively to the application of learning beyond the immediate instructional setting. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education instructors may combine verbal explanations with practical demonstrations and guided practice when teaching skills-based content. Providing learners with opportunities to observe, practise, receive feedback, and apply demonstrated skills may strengthen the connection between instructional activities and real-world application. Adult learners, adult education instructors, programme coordinators, curriculum developers, and educational administrators are expected to benefit from the findings. Adult learners may develop stronger abilities to apply acquired skills in practical situations, while instructors may gain a useful instructional approach for improving skill application. Programme coordinators and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen practical components of adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical demonstration activities into skills-oriented learning. Instructors should provide clear demonstrations, allow learners to practise demonstrated procedures, and create opportunities for applying acquired skills to relevant practical tasks. It is concluded that practical demonstration activities have the potential to improve skill transfer among adult learners and strengthen the practical value of adult education.
