Impact of Recognition of Prior Learning on Adult Learners’ Educational Progress

Abstract

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) refers to the process of identifying, assessing, and giving appropriate consideration to knowledge, skills, and competencies that adults have acquired through previous education, work experience, training, or other learning experiences, while educational progress refers to the advancement of learners through their educational programmes as reflected in academic development, successful completion of learning requirements, progression to higher levels, and achievement of educational goals. Recognition of prior learning can help adult learners receive appropriate credit for existing competencies and avoid unnecessary repetition of knowledge they already possess. However, limited recognition of adults’ previous learning experiences may create difficulties in their educational progression. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of recognition of prior learning on adult learners’ educational progress. Recognition of prior learning involves identifying relevant previous learning, documenting evidence of acquired knowledge and skills, assessing such learning against established standards, and determining appropriate recognition or credit. The process may consider learning acquired through formal education, workplace experience, vocational training, community activities, and other structured or experiential learning opportunities. Effective RPL procedures require clear assessment criteria, appropriate documentation, competent assessors, and transparent processes for determining whether previous learning meets specified educational requirements. Adult learners’ educational progress refers to their movement and development within an educational programme, including successful completion of courses, advancement through programme levels, achievement of learning requirements, and attainment of educational objectives. Adults often enter education with knowledge and competencies acquired from different life and work experiences. When such prior learning is appropriately recognized, learners may be able to focus on areas where new learning is required rather than repeating competencies they have already acquired. RPL may therefore contribute to more efficient progression and encourage adults to continue pursuing their educational goals. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on recognition of prior learning practices and adult learners’ educational progress. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of recognition of prior learning on educational progress. The study is expected to establish that recognition of prior learning has a significant impact on adult learners’ educational progress. Adult learners whose previous knowledge and competencies are appropriately recognized are expected to demonstrate better progression through their educational programmes, reduced repetition of already acquired competencies, and greater ability to advance toward their educational goals. The findings may also indicate that effective recognition procedures can make adult education more responsive to learners’ existing knowledge and experiences. The findings will have implications for adult education by highlighting the importance of recognizing learning acquired outside conventional classroom settings. Adult education providers can develop clear procedures for identifying, documenting, assessing, and recognizing learners’ prior knowledge and competencies. This can support a more flexible learning system in which adults’ previous experiences are considered when determining their educational needs and appropriate learning pathways. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, learning institutions, RPL assessors, education policymakers, and organizations involved in adult education. Adult learners may benefit from educational pathways that acknowledge their existing competencies, while educators and administrators may gain useful information for improving admission, assessment, and progression practices. Policymakers and institutions may also use the findings to strengthen systems for recognizing knowledge acquired through formal, non-formal, informal, and experiential learning. The study will recommend that adult education institutions should establish clear and accessible mechanisms for recognizing prior learning and provide appropriate guidance to learners throughout the process. RPL assessment should be based on transparent criteria, reliable evidence, and competent assessment procedures. Adult education providers should also train relevant personnel to identify and assess prior learning appropriately. The study concludes that effective recognition of prior learning can contribute to adult learners’ educational progress by acknowledging existing competencies and providing more appropriate pathways for continued educational advancement.
