Impact of Service-Quality Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Customer Experiences
Abstract
Service-quality education refers to structured learning that develops individuals’ understanding of the standards, characteristics, and indicators used to assess the quality of services provided by organizations. Adults’ ability to evaluate customer experiences involves their capacity to examine how customers are treated, assess the quality of service encounters, identify strengths and weaknesses, and form reasonable judgments about the overall customer experience. Limited understanding of service-quality principles may make it difficult for adults to critically assess the services they receive. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of service-quality education on adults’ ability to evaluate customer experiences. Service-quality education introduces adults to important dimensions and indicators of effective service delivery. These may include reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, courtesy, communication, accessibility, and consistency in service provision. Through discussions, case studies, practical examples, service scenarios, and evaluation exercises, learners can examine different customer-service situations and identify factors that contribute to positive or negative experiences. Such learning enables adults to develop a structured approach to examining service encounters rather than relying solely on general impressions. Adults’ ability to evaluate customer experiences involves identifying relevant aspects of a service encounter, comparing actual service with expected standards, recognizing areas of satisfaction or dissatisfaction, and providing reasoned judgments about service quality. Service-quality education can strengthen this ability by giving adults appropriate criteria and concepts for examining customer interactions. Increased knowledge of service-quality indicators may enable adults to distinguish between different aspects of service performance and make more informed evaluations of their experiences. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the impact of service-quality education on adults’ ability to evaluate customer experiences. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured customer-experience evaluation assessment administered before and after exposure to service-quality education. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ evaluation abilities. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to service-quality education demonstrate improved ability to evaluate customer experiences compared with their performance before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show greater ability to identify service-quality indicators, recognize positive and negative elements of customer interactions, compare service experiences with appropriate standards, and provide clearer evaluations. The findings may indicate that structured education can strengthen adults’ capacity to assess customer experiences systematically. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use customer-service scenarios, case studies, service evaluations, role-play activities, and practical exercises to help learners develop the ability to assess real-life service encounters. Learning activities should encourage adults to consider multiple aspects of service quality rather than focusing on a single feature of an interaction. Feedback and guided evaluation can further help learners develop accuracy and consistency in assessing customer experiences. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, consumers, service organizations, businesses, and institutions offering continuing education programmes. Adults may develop stronger skills for assessing the quality of services they encounter and communicating their observations more effectively. Educators may also gain useful information for designing practical service-quality learning programmes, while service organizations may benefit indirectly from consumers who can provide clearer and more informed evaluations of their experiences. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate service-quality education through practical scenarios, case studies, evaluation exercises, guided discussions, and role-play activities. Adult educators should emphasize relevant service-quality indicators and provide learners with opportunities to apply evaluation criteria to realistic customer experiences. Learners should also be encouraged to distinguish personal preferences from observable aspects of service performance when making evaluations. The study concludes that service-quality education has the potential to improve adults’ ability to evaluate customer experiences systematically and make more informed judgments about service delivery.
