Impact of Skills Acquisition Programmes on the Economic Participation of Adult Learners
Abstract
Skills acquisition programmes are organized educational and training activities designed to equip adults with practical, vocational, technical, entrepreneurial, and occupational competencies, while economic participation refers to the involvement of individuals in productive economic activities such as employment, self-employment, entrepreneurship, trading, and other income-generating activities. Economic participation is important for improving livelihoods, strengthening financial independence, and increasing adults' contribution to household and community economic activities. However, many adult learners experience difficulties entering or sustaining productive economic activities because of limited access to relevant practical skills. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of skills acquisition programmes on the economic participation of adult learners. Skills acquisition programmes provide structured opportunities for adults to learn practical competencies that can be applied in different occupational and economic settings. These programmes may include tailoring, catering, farming, hairdressing, craft production, computer-related skills, technical trades, entrepreneurship, and other vocational activities. Through demonstrations, practical exercises, supervised training, and hands-on learning, participants can develop competencies that are relevant to their economic needs and available opportunities. Economic participation among adult learners involves engaging in activities that contribute to personal, household, or community economic productivity. This may include securing employment, establishing small businesses, providing vocational services, engaging in trading, producing goods, or participating in other income-generating activities. Skills acquisition programmes may therefore influence economic participation by providing adults with practical competencies that can be applied to employment, self-employment, and entrepreneurial activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected skills acquisition programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a skills assessment designed to measure participation in skills acquisition programmes and economic participation among the respondents. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that skills acquisition programmes have a positive impact on the economic participation of adult learners. It is anticipated that adult learners who participate in relevant skills acquisition programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in employment, self-employment, entrepreneurship, and other productive economic activities. The study may also establish that practical skills acquired through structured training can improve adults' capacity to apply their competencies in income-generating activities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators and skills trainers should emphasize practical and competency-based approaches that allow learners to acquire and practise useful occupational skills. Training activities should include demonstrations, hands-on exercises, practical assignments, and opportunities to apply acquired skills in realistic economic situations. This approach can make skills acquisition programmes more relevant to the economic needs of adult learners. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, vocational training providers, adult education institutions, community organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved practical competencies and greater opportunities for productive economic engagement. Adult educators and training providers may gain useful information for improving skills acquisition programmes, while policymakers and development organizations may use the findings to strengthen adult education initiatives aimed at supporting employment, entrepreneurship, and livelihood development. The study recommends that skills acquisition programmes should provide practical training that corresponds with relevant employment and business opportunities. Adult education institutions should strengthen hands-on training, provide appropriate learning materials and equipment, and encourage learners to apply acquired skills in productive activities. Training providers should also regularly review programme content to ensure that the skills taught remain relevant to learners' economic needs. The study concludes that effective skills acquisition programmes can contribute to increased economic participation among adult learners.
