Impact of Study Planning Education on Independent Learning among Adult Learners

Abstract

Study planning education refers to the provision of knowledge and skills that enable learners to organize their study activities, allocate learning time, establish priorities, and develop suitable approaches to achieving academic goals, while independent learning refers to the ability of learners to take responsibility for planning, carrying out, monitoring, and evaluating their own learning activities. For adult learners who often combine education with work, family responsibilities, and other commitments, effective study planning can be important for maintaining consistent learning activities. However, difficulties in organizing study time and learning tasks may limit adults’ ability to learn independently. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of study planning education on independent learning among adult learners. Study planning education exposes adult learners to practical approaches for organizing learning activities and managing available study time. It may include instruction on setting study priorities, preparing study schedules, identifying learning tasks, allocating adequate time to different subjects, establishing realistic study targets, and monitoring progress. Through guided planning exercises and practical learning activities, adult learners can develop greater awareness of how to structure their learning activities according to their individual responsibilities and educational needs. Independent learning involves learners taking active responsibility for their learning without depending entirely on continuous direction from an instructor. It includes the ability to initiate learning activities, select appropriate learning resources, organize study activities, monitor progress, and evaluate learning outcomes. Study planning education can support independent learning by providing learners with practical strategies for organizing their learning activities and maintaining purposeful study routines. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to study planning education and the level of independent learning among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that study planning education has a positive impact on independent learning among adult learners. Adult learners who receive study planning education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to organize their learning activities, manage study time, establish learning priorities, monitor their progress, and take greater responsibility for their educational tasks. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate practical study-planning activities into instructional programmes and guide learners in developing realistic study schedules and organizing learning tasks. Such activities can help adult learners apply planning skills to their individual learning situations and encourage greater responsibility for their educational progress. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved organization of their learning activities, while adult educators may gain useful information for supporting learners who need greater independence in their studies. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen learning-support strategies within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate study planning education into their learning activities and provide practical guidance on scheduling, prioritizing, monitoring, and evaluating study tasks. Adult educators should encourage learners to develop realistic study plans that accommodate their educational and personal responsibilities. The study will conclude that effective study planning education can strengthen independent learning among adult learners by helping them organize and take greater responsibility for their learning activities.
