Impact of Tourism Entrepreneurship Education on Adults’ Ability to Develop Local Tourism Products
Abstract
Tourism Entrepreneurship Education refers to organized learning experiences that equip adults with entrepreneurial knowledge, skills, and competencies for identifying, developing, and managing opportunities within the tourism sector. Adults’ ability to develop local tourism products is important because tourism products based on local attractions, culture, skills, experiences, and services can create economic opportunities while promoting community resources. However, some adults may experience difficulties in identifying tourism resources, transforming them into marketable products, and developing offerings that respond to visitor interests and needs. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Tourism Entrepreneurship Education on adults’ ability to develop local tourism products. Tourism Entrepreneurship Education exposes adults to concepts such as tourism opportunity identification, product development, market analysis, visitor needs, creativity, value creation, pricing, promotion, service development, and entrepreneurial planning. Through practical learning activities, adults can examine local tourism resources and explore ways of transforming them into experiences, services, or products that may appeal to visitors. The educational process can also encourage participants to assess the uniqueness, usefulness, feasibility, and potential appeal of tourism products before developing their ideas into more structured offerings. Adults’ ability to develop local tourism products involves their capacity to identify suitable tourism resources, generate product ideas, combine resources into useful visitor experiences, assess visitor needs, and develop tourism offerings that are practical and appealing. This ability requires creativity, opportunity recognition, planning, communication, and basic entrepreneurial judgment. Tourism Entrepreneurship Education may strengthen these abilities by providing adults with opportunities to examine tourism resources, generate product ideas, evaluate alternatives, and develop practical tourism concepts based on local strengths and visitor interests. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and tourism-related entrepreneurship programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to develop local tourism products. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Tourism Entrepreneurship Education on adults’ ability to develop local tourism products. The study is expected to establish that Tourism Entrepreneurship Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to develop local tourism products. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in identifying tourism resources, generating product ideas, assessing visitor needs, organizing tourism experiences, and developing practical tourism offerings. The study is also expected to indicate that practical entrepreneurial learning can strengthen adults’ confidence and competence in transforming local resources and community knowledge into tourism products. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, tourism educators, entrepreneurship educators, community educators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating practical tourism-product development activities that encourage participants to explore local resources and develop tourism offerings. Field observations, product-design exercises, visitor-needs assessments, group projects, and tourism business simulations could provide adults with meaningful opportunities to apply entrepreneurial knowledge to local tourism situations. The study is expected to contribute to the understanding of how Adult Education can support tourism entrepreneurship and the development of locally relevant tourism products. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide learning opportunities on tourism entrepreneurship, opportunity identification, product development, visitor needs, creativity, promotion, and entrepreneurial planning. Such programmes should emphasize practical activities that enable adults to transform local tourism resources into useful and potentially viable products. The study concludes that effective Tourism Entrepreneurship Education can strengthen adults’ ability to develop local tourism products and encourage greater participation in tourism-related economic activities.
