Impact of Workplace Conduct Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Unprofessional Behaviour
Abstract
Workplace conduct education provides adults with knowledge about appropriate standards of behaviour, communication, responsibility, and interaction within professional environments. The ability to identify unprofessional behaviour involves recognizing actions that violate expected workplace standards, such as disrespectful communication, persistent lateness, inappropriate use of workplace resources, disregard for procedures, or improper interactions with colleagues and clients. Limited understanding of acceptable workplace conduct may make it difficult for adults to distinguish professional behaviour from conduct that is inappropriate. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of workplace conduct education on adults’ ability to identify unprofessional behaviour. Workplace conduct education can expose adults to professional standards through lessons, discussions, case studies, role-play, workplace scenarios, and guided analysis of common conduct issues. Learners can examine appropriate and inappropriate behaviours and discuss how workplace rules, professional expectations, and organisational procedures guide employee conduct. These educational activities can provide adults with practical knowledge for recognizing behaviours that may be considered unprofessional. Adults’ ability to identify unprofessional behaviour involves recognizing conduct that conflicts with established workplace expectations and distinguishing it from acceptable professional practices. Workplace conduct education can strengthen this ability by presenting learners with realistic workplace situations and encouraging them to evaluate different behaviours against professional standards. Improved identification skills may help adults develop greater awareness of appropriate workplace conduct and recognize situations that require correction or attention. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and scenario-based assessment items designed to measure exposure to workplace conduct education and adults’ ability to identify unprofessional behaviour. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that workplace conduct education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify unprofessional behaviour. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize inappropriate communication, failure to follow workplace procedures, irresponsible conduct, and other behaviours that conflict with professional standards. The findings may also indicate that practical scenarios and case-based learning are effective approaches for developing adults’ awareness of professional workplace conduct. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of workplace behaviour within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate realistic workplace situations into lessons rather than relying exclusively on theoretical descriptions of professional conduct. Role-play, case analysis, guided discussions, and scenario-based exercises can help learners evaluate workplace behaviours and develop practical judgement about professional standards. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, employees, employers, workplace learning providers, and organisations. Adults may become more aware of expected professional standards and better able to recognize behaviours that may be inappropriate in workplace settings. Educators may gain useful strategies for teaching workplace conduct, while organisations may benefit from employees having clearer understanding of professional expectations and appropriate workplace behaviour. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate workplace conduct education through practical and participatory learning activities. Adult educators should use case studies, role-play, workplace scenarios, and guided discussions to strengthen learners’ ability to identify unprofessional behaviour. Organisations should also provide clear workplace conduct guidelines and regular awareness programmes for employees. The study concludes that workplace conduct education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to identify unprofessional behaviour when instruction is practical, clear, and connected to workplace experiences.
